Tussen brol en breekbaar zou je deze keuze kunnen noemen.  Wat bezielt ons om putje winter gevoelige en overgevoelige snaren te betokkelen, en elkander op te zoeken? 'Een diversiteit aan oplossingen om ons weer op het donkere pad naar wat toekomst heet te begeven. En toch ontloop je de oorlog niet.  En de hoop dat wij met zijn allen wijzer willen worden.  Luister, frons en geniet.

Het is nauwelijks het seizoen voor iets onheiligs, dus Sam Smith’s “Night Before Christmas”, een nieuw origineel voor de feestdagen geschreven met de vaste medewerker van de muzikant, Simon Aldred, is smaakvol, traditioneel en lieflijk soulvol.

“Nu alles gesloten is, kun je nergens heen”, zingt Smith over een spaarzaam gitaararrangement, maar de sfeer wordt al snel vrolijker door de toevoeging van piano, percussie en een vloot achtergrondzangeressen. “Baby, this time of year can make you feel old,” zingt Smith in het refrein. “Trim This Tree”, een origineel van de Americana stalwarts Old Crow Medicine Show, is een pittige, af en toe hilarische momentopname van Kerstmis in het moderne, overontwikkelde Nashville: Klotsende rendieren rijden voorbij op een pedaal, de ornamenten zijn uitsluitend van Dollar Tree, en, zoals frontman Ketch Secor het zegt in een Springsteeniaanse keelklank: “Voor deze Airbnb staan een Jozef en een Maria en Jezus, allemaal verlicht als een Walmart.” Maar zelfs in zo’n omgeving weet de groep met zijn opzwepende geluid een oprechte down-home cheer op te roepen. Laat je niet afleiden door het overbekende gezicht van de overbekende film, het gaat duidelijk om het prachtige liedje: Carol of the Bells, een liedje uit Oekraïne dat later in de score van ‘Home Alone’ terecht kwam.

Het begon als "Shchedryk", een liedje over een vogeltje dat in 1922 voor het eerst werd uitgevoerd in de Verenigde Staten. De betoverende melodie ervan wordt sindsdien gezongen door Beyoncé en Barenaked Ladies.
Jarenlang maakte componist John Williams van de twinkelende kerstfavoriet "Carol of the Bells" een vast onderdeel van zijn seizoensprogramma. Nu de naam van het Oekraïns kinderkoor 'Shchedryk'. 

As the original “Shchedryk” gained prominence in the late 1910s as a popular a cappella, it wound up providing a soundtrack to tumult. The country was embroiled in the Bolshevik Revolution, which would later pave the way for the Russian Civil War and the subsequent creation of the Soviet Union. Simultaneously, Leontovych’s reputation as a star of Ukrainian culture was on the rise. After fleeing Kyiv upon its capture by the White Army, he founded a music school in the western Ukrainian town of Tul’chyn. But on Jan. 23, 1921, he was targeted during a visit to his parents’ home, and an undercover Russian agent killed Leontovych in his sleep, part of a concerted effort to wipe away Ukrainian culture.

Then as now, Ukraine was under threat from Russia, a shadow of an anxious past that still extends over the country. “We started planning the 100th-anniversary show two years ago,” Filevska said in a phone interview the day after the concert. “Back then, we had something very positive and cheerful in mind. But when the invasion broke out, we at first doubted we’d even be able to complete this. It was really hard to have to organize something while there’s a full-scale invasion happening in your country.”(NY Times)
