Van 26 april tot 1 mei 1895: Het eerste proces rond Wilde.
Van 20-25 mei 1895: Tweede rechtsgeding en veroordeling van Wilde.

Op 24 oktober 1895 een mooie aantekening rond literaire kritiek: een verhaal kan zijn eigen geheim inhouden, een geheim dat de lezer moet vinden en interpreteren.
Het is een aantekening die rechtstreeks The Figure in the Carpet voorafgaat.

Op 13 februari 1896 noteert hij dat zijn artikel over Alexander Dumas als “shocking their prudery” is geweigerd.
Hij ziet daarin wel iets voor een ironische of satirische geschiedenis.

Op 17 april 1896 houdt professor William James in Yale een rede als president van de Society for Psychical Research.
The Will to Believe and onther Essays in Popular Philosophy

Met vakantie in Chocorua in juni van dat jaar lezen we in zijn Notesbooks:

‘…there is n’t an object in the house that isn’t associated with past life, omd summers, dead people, people who will never come again, etc, and the way it takes you ropund the heart when you first come and open the house from its long wintersleep is most extraordinary…”

Van 4 juli tot 26 september 1896 verschijnt The Other House in The Illustrated London News.
Braches noteert: ‘het verhaal is gewaardeerd als de eerste volwaardige Ibsen-“tragedie” van James.
In 1896-97 kwam het ook in boekvorm uit.

Op 11 oktober 1896 overlijdt aartsbisschop Benson.
James is begonnen aan een verhaal waarbij de puurheid van de kinderziel en het zedelijk verval elkaar raken. What Maisy Knew’

‘Elk klein hoofdstuk is een moment, a stage.” noteert hij over het verhaal op 26 oktober 1896.

Uit de voorbereidingen van What Maisie Knew blijkt dat James vooral op zoek is naar symmetrie en evenwicht in het verhaal, maar toch wil hij die anderzijds niet te duidelijk zichtbaar maken.

Op 23 november 1896 komen we weer bij Ibsen uit als Little Eyolf in Londen zijn première beleeft.
De Daily News van 24 november van dat jaar meldt:

“..nor is it clear how a different training would have saved their offspring from the Rat-Wife’s fatal arguments.”

En de Daily Telegraph van 24 november :

”…the play might called Litlle Eyolf; or, Not Before the Boy.’

En in de Sunday Times van 29 november:

‘..neither Almers nor the sensible Asta would for a minute have permitted her (d.w.z. Ratwoman) so frighten the nervous little fellow.”

Op nieuwjaarsdag 1897 dateert James de eerst aflevering van zijn artikelenreeks ‘Londen’ in Harper’s Weekly.
En daar komt de kerstpantomime, en een schitterende beschrijving van het mistige Londen.
Het is daarom maar het gemakkelijkste om het nabije te beschrijven wegens tekort aan klaarte.

‘…comfortably conscious indeed of the blessed support of the Christmas void, the big brown desert of a town laid waste by the fond fancy (sweetest, for the London-lover at least of all English superstitions) that it is the time of the year for the breast of nature.

‘Everyone’ is in the country -every one but the superlatively wise for whom the sense of such a shrinkage is an old and charming story, a story rich in impressions of the way things loom larger in the comperative solitude, the way ‘productions’, of almost any kind, become striking and the pink and gold of the shop-fronts irradiate the fog.
If the spirit of pantomime pervades in this manner the very streets, I hasten to add that theirs is the truest felicity who have schoolboys at large to take to the play.
The pantomime, it is true, is not the play to the extent it used to be; but the difference is made up by the fact that the play is more and more the pantomime.’

Op 15 januari 1897 begint What Maisie Knew als feuilleton te verschijnen, en in The Yellow Book verschijnt James’ opstel She and He; Recent Documents. over de vriendschap tussen George Sand en Alfred de Musset.

Op 19 april 1897 wordt Oscar Wilde vrijgelaten en ondertekent Havelock Ellis het voorwoord tot zijn Sexual Inversion
